Summer Update

PSIA Pioneer, Yosemite Ski Instructor Nic Fiore Dies

PSIA/AASI-West is mourning the loss of Nic Fiore, who served as Executive Director of PSIA-W for nearly 30 years. He died June 16 in a Fresno nursing home. He was 88 years old.

"This is a sad day, Nic was the spirit and foundation of PSIA-W. His life was dedicated to the profession, teaching people to ski.  His passion for PSIA and ski teaching was very obvious to anyone that had contact with him. I  feel very grateful to have know Nic, skied with him, and thank him for his support to all of us during the transition period from Nic being the executive director to where we are today." -Dave Achey, Past President, PSIA/AASI-W

Fiore directed Yosemite's Badger Pass Ski area for over 45 years, and is estimated to have taught more than 100,000 people to ski. Fiore was born in Montreal, Canada Dec. 1, 1920. After serving in the Canadian army during World War 2, he was invited to Badger Pass for 'one season' but found it to his liking. Fiore became involved in various operations in Yosemite, including managing the Glacier Point Lodge, and serving as maitre d'hotel at the Ahwahnee Lodge.

Fiore's dedication to high standards in the ski instruction business led him to involvement in the Far West Ski Instructors Association, and eventually to PSIA, when it was founded in 1961.
