Adaptive: Event Descriptions (2010)

Welcome to Adaptive |
This is a PSIA/AASI-W Adaptive education event. It counts for continuing education credit. This event will include an introduction to and discussion of the Adaptive Ski and Snowboard certification process. Members will participate in skiing/riding, will be introduced to a sample of assists and will be given examples of exam teaching situations and on hill questioning. The clinic will be tailored to the needs of the participants. Feedback will be given to the extent possible on personal skiing/riding, knowledge of adaptive, and teaching ability. Depending on participation, ski and snowboard participants may ski and ride together. At the end of the clinic, participants will have an understanding of the adaptive exam process, how to prepare and what manuals and study guides are recommended. Participants will also have experienced a fun day of skiing/riding with other members. Skiers and riders may be combined for this event.

ADAPTIVE LEVEL 1 IN-HOUSE VALIDATION (SKI OR SNOWBOARD) |
This is a one day clinic/exam where you will be coached and tested on your skiing/riding ability in one of the six disciplines at LI. Candidates will have participated in a multiple week training program conducted at their home area by a qualified in-house trainer. Candidates are required to bring an Adaptive LI Workbook, completed in the discipline which you are testing on, and be familiar with the alpine or snowboard level 1 workbook or have a level one alpine or snowboard certification. These Workbooks are available from the PSIA-W website, must be completed, and must be signed off by the area in-house trainer. You will be given a brief introduction, will take several warm-up runs, and will be told what the outline of the day will be. You will be coached and tested on teaching skiers/riders through open stance parallel/level 4 riding. You will also be coached and tested on your functional skiing/riding as it relates to adaptive teaching and assists for your discipline (see the LI/II discipline event descriptions below). You will be coached, and by successfully completing this day, will have displayed an understanding of the disabilities and the medications you may encounter with skiers/riders under these categories. Passing the level I ski/ride validation equates to an Adaptive Level I Certification. Candidates will perform free skiing/riding, demonstrations, and tasks. Additional coaching will be provided as needed throughout the day. Adaptive LI skiing/riding requirements/standards are the same as Alpine or Snowboard LI skiing/riding standards. At the end of the day, candidates will know which standards they meet, which standards require more work, and suggested steps to improve. Skiers and riders will not be combined for this event.

ADAPTIVE LEVEL I SKIING/RIDING (SKIING/SNOWBOARDING) |
This is a one day clinic/exam where you will be coached and tested on your skiing/riding ability. Additional coaching will be provided as needed throughout the day. Adaptive LI skiing/riding requirements/standards are the same as Alpine or Snowboard LI skiing/riding standards. At the end of the day, candidates will know which standards they meet, which standards require more work, and suggested steps to improve. Passing this exam, or the Alpine or Snowboard Skiing/riding LI Certification is required as well as one day of the Adaptive LI / II Teaching and Technical exam in order to achieve Adaptive LI Certification. Skiers and riders will not be combined for this event.

ADAPTIVE LEVEL 2 SKIING/RIDING (SKIING/SNOWBOARDING) |
This is a one day clinic/exam where you will be coached and tested on your skiing/riding ability. Candidates will have a brief introduction, will take several warm-up runs, and will be told what the outline of the day will be. Candidates will perform free skiing/riding, demonstrations, and tasks. Additional coaching will be provided as needed throughout the day. Adaptive skiing/riding LII requirements/standards are the same as Alpine or Snowboard skiing/riding LII standards. At the end of the day, candidates will know which standards they meet, which standards require more work, and suggested steps to improve. Passing this exam, or the Alpine or Snowboard Skiing/riding LII Certification is required as well as all three Adaptive LI / II Teaching and Technical Modules in order to achieve Adaptive LII Certification. Skiers and riders will not be combined for this event.

ADAPTIVE LEVEL 3 SKIING/RIDING (SKIING/SNOWBOARDING) |
This is a two day clinic/exam where you will be coached and tested on your skiing/riding ability. Each day, candidates will have a brief introduction, will take several warm-up runs, and will be told what the outline of the day will be. Candidates will perform free skiing/riding, demonstrations, and tasks. Additional coaching will be provided as needed throughout the day. Adaptive skiing/riding LIII requirements/standards are the same as Alpine or Snowboard skiing/riding LIII standards. At the end of the day, candidates will know which standards they meet, which standards require more work, and suggested steps to improve. Passing this exam, or the Alpine or Snowboard Skiing/riding LIII Certification is required as well as the Adaptive LIII Teaching and Technical Module in order to achieve Adaptive LIII Certification. Skiers and riders will not be combined for this event.

ADAPTIVE COGNITIVE/VISUAL IMPAIRMENT (Cog/VI) |
This is a two day clinic/exam. One day spent on each discipline. . Each day, candidates will have a brief introduction, will take several warm-up runs, and will be told what the outline of the day will be. Candidates will be given teaching scenarios to perform on the snow, and will be coached and questioned to determine their knowledge and skill level. You will be coached and tested on your ability to teach skiers/riders with cognitive impairments and low vision. You will be coached and tested on teaching skiers/riders through open stance parallel/level 4 riding. You will also be coached and tested on your functional skiing/riding as it relates to adaptive teaching including, blind guiding skills, two point holds, skiing/riding with bamboo aids, tethers and ski/board tip connectors. You will be coached, and by successfully completing these days, will have displayed an understanding of the disabilities and the medications you may encounter with skiers/riders under these categories. Passing the level I ski/ride module and one teaching technique (discipline) equates to an Adaptive Level I Certification. Passing the remaining modules/disciplines at a Level II standard, and the level II ski/ride module equates to an Adaptive Level II Certification. Skiers and riders will not be combined for this event. For level 1: candidates are required to bring an Adaptive LI Workbook, completed in the discipline which you are testing on, and be familiar with the alpine or snowboard level 1 workbook or have a level one alpine or snowboard certification.

ADAPTIVE MONO-SKI/BI-SKI TEACHING MODULE LEVEL LI / II (SKI OR SNOWBOARD) |
This is a two day clinic/exam. One day spent on each discipline. You will be coached and tested on your ability to teach students who are in a mono-ski and bi-ski. You will be coached and tested on teaching mono and bi skiers through open stance parallel equivalents. You will also be coached and tested on your functional skiing/riding as it relates to adaptive teaching including bucket assists, bi-ski tethering, emergency stops, chairlift loading and unloading of bi-skis and mono-skis. You will be coached on, and by successfully completing these days, will have displayed an understanding of the disabilities and the medications you may encounter with students under these categories. Passing the level I ski/ride module and one teaching technique (discipline) equates to an Adaptive Level I Certification. Passing the remaining modules/disciplines at Level II standards, and the level II ski module equates to an Adaptive Level II Certification. Skiers and riders will not be combined for this event. For level 1: candidates are required to bring an Adaptive LI Workbook, completed in the discipline which you are testing on, and be familiar with the alpine or snowboard level 1 workbook or have a level one alpine or snowboard certification.

ADAPTIVE THREE TRACK/FOUR TRACK TEACHING MODULE LEVEL LI / II (SKI) |
This is a two day clinic/exam. One day spent on each discipline. You will be coached and tested on your ability to teach skiers who three track and four track. You will be coached on and tested on teaching skiers through open stance parallel equivalent. You will also be coached and tested on your functional skiing/riding as it relates to adaptive ski teaching, including skiing/riding three track and four track on blue terrain. You will be coached on, and by successfully completing these days, will have displayed an understanding of the disabilities and the medications you may encounter with skiers under these categories. Passing the level I ski module and one teaching technique (discipline) equates to an Adaptive Level I Certification. Passing the remaining modules/disciplines at Level II standards, and the level II ski module equates to an Adaptive Level II Certification. For Level 1: candidates are required to bring an Adaptive LI Workbook, completed in the discipline which you are testing on, and be familiar with the alpine or snowboard level 1 workbook or have a level one alpine or snowboard certification

ADAPTIVE STAND-UP TEACHING MODULE LEVEL LI / II (SNOWBOARD) |
This is a two day clinic/exam. You will be coached and tested on your ability to teach clients with physical disabilities, yet are able to stand up on their snowboarding equipment. You will also be coached and tested on your functional riding as it relates to adaptive teaching including two point holds, tethers, stand-up outriggers, bamboo, horse and buggy, the "Snow-Wing" and Rider Bar. You will be coached on, and by successfully completing these days, will have displayed an understanding of the disabilities and the medications you may encounter with riders under these categories. Passing the level I riding module and one teaching module equates to an Adaptive Level I Certification. Passing the remaining modules/disciplines at level II standards and the level II ride module equates to an Adaptive Level II Certification. For Level 1: candidates are required to bring an Adaptive LI Workbook, completed in the discipline which you are testing on, and be familiar with the alpine or snowboard level 1 workbook or have a level one alpine or snowboard certification.

ADAPTIVE TEACHING MODULE LEVEL III (SKI OR SNOWBOARD) |
This is a three day clinic/exam where you will be coached and tested on your ability to teach students of all levels under all disciplines. (three track/four track or stand-up, mono-ski/bi-ski, and cognitive impairment/low vision) You will also be coached and tested on your functional skiing/riding as it relates to adaptive teaching. You will be coached and tested on your ability to ski sit down equipment (bi-ski and mono-ski) on blue terrain. You will be coached on, and by successfully completing these days, will have displayed an understanding of the disabilities and the medications you may encounter with students under all these categories, including students with multiple disabilities. There is no partial pass, all disciplines must be successfully completed. Having passed the level III ski module and the level III teaching module will result in an Adaptive Level III Certification. Skiers and riders will not be combined for this event.
