CLINIC & MODULE INFORMATION:

Signing Up
To sign-up for clinics or events you can register online or fax in the event application. Please, no phone registration. All registrations must be received 2 weeks prior to the event to guarantee your spot. Late registrations will be charged an additional $20.

Email Verification
We will email a verification of your registration, updates, and changes to all participants with a valid email address.

Waiting List
Our goal is to serve all members who sign up for clinics. If a clinic is full, you may still sign-up and be placed on a Wait List. If it is possible for us to accommodate you, we will email or contact you by phone.

Cancellation Policy
Please cancel before the clinic registration deadline. There are penalties for cancellation just prior to the event, unless a medical verification is submitted with your cancellation. **The Western Division reserves the right to cancel any event if it lacks registrations by the published date. All fees will be returned.

Please see the certification guide listed under the discipline you are interested in for more information on written tests, scoring, preparation materials, and recommended training.

Meeting Times & Locations
All education events and exam modules begin at 8:30, unless otherwise indicated on your confirmation. In most cases the meeting area is in the resort base lodge (look for event signage at the area). When there is more then one base lodge for the resort, you will receive email confirmation of the events meeting place.

PREMIERE EVENTS

FALL RALLY & ED CORE[$40 per day]

Fall Rally
This 2-day event is open to the entire membership as an opportunity to get an early season tune-up. Come prepared to have fun and hone-in riding skills as well as receive updates on division and national education materials and updates.

Ed Core
This 2-day clinic is available for Level 2 Resort Trainers and ALL Level 3 Certified Instructor. Review the most current standards and education materials for the 07/08 season. Receive important training information to take back to your resort and get feedback on your personal riding skills for the coming season. Share ideas about how to lead exceptional clinics! Topics to be covered: Level-I In-House Training programs, demos/tasks for Level I-III Modules, developing solid technical understanding of movement patterns and more.

SPRING CONVENTION
Convention is our annual event that wraps-up a great season with good friends, spring skiing & riding, and a wide assortment of clinics. Please stay tuned to the 2008 Spring Convention page for more details throughout the season.

LEVEL I CERTIFICATION EVENTS

LEVEL I MODULE [$70 per day]
3-day program for members who are actively instructing at a Snowsports School

This Level I Certification Event covers teaching and skiing/riding demonstrations, movement analysis, and technical knowledge to meet our National Standards for Level I Certification. Successful candidates that pass the Module and have completed 20 hrs of teaching at their Snowsports School, become a Certified Level I Instructor.

Prerequisites

  • Must be at least 16 years old, and a Registered Member of PSIA/AASI - W.
  • Participants must be capable of linking turns on blue intermediate terrain.
  • Participants must meet all areas of AASI- W Level One Standards by completion of Event.

LEVEL I NEW INSTRUCTOR MODULE [$70 per day]
6-day program for members not actively instructing at a Snowsports School

This Level I Certification Event combines 3-days of education with the 3-day Level I Module. Candidates will cover teaching progressions, riding demonstrations, and movement analysis skills for levels 1-4. This course is fun! You'll gain a basic understanding of the technical knowledge that makes up instructing while improving your own skills and personal skiing or riding. Our professional staff will inspire you to work hard and provide coaching to meet our National Standards for Level I Certification. Successful candidates receive a certificate of completion and are eligible for Level I Pin and official Certification after 20 hrs. of teaching (2yr/season cap on completing teaching hours)

  • Must be at least 16 years old, and a Registered Member of PSIA/AASI - W.
  • Participants must be capable of linking turns on blue intermediate terrain.
  • Participants must meet all areas of AASI- W Level One Standards by completion of Event.

LEVEL I IN-HOUSE CERTIFICATION
Training scheduled by resort trainer
Validation clinic scheduled by resort trainer

This program allows members who are actively instructing at a resort the opportunity to train for their Level I Certification with an In-House Resort Trainer. After all study sessions and on-hill trainings have finished, candidates will be validated by a PSIA/AASI-W Examiner - to assure they meet the National Level I Certification Standards. Candidates that meet these standards and are validated - pass their Level I Certification.

How to get Started:

  1. Check that your Snowsports School offers this option for Level I Certification.
  2. Find out who your coordinates your resort training and let them know you are interested in joining an In-House Level I Certification program.
  3. Become a Registered Member of PSIA/AASI-W and complete the PSIA/AASI-W In-House Level I Certification Application. [This fee includes a Portfolio that will guide you through your training]
  4. Attend all the study sessions/on-hill trainings that your trainer schedules.
  5. Once you have completed your portfolio and training, your trainer will schedule a validation clinic with a PSIA/AASI-W Examiner, at least three weeks prior to the validation date.
  6. You will need to complete an Event Application to pay for the In-House Level I Certification Validation Clinic (this application must be received in the office 2 weeks prior to the validation date).
  7. Upon successful completion of the Validation Clinic, candidates will be awarded their Level I Certification.

LEVEL II RIDING MODULE [$80 per day]

This 3-day event includes a riding assessment, feedback, and coaching from clinician to meet the Level II Western Division Standards.* Demonstrations must illustrate accurate movement patterns. Scoring for this event is pass or fail. Essential elements of all riding maneuvers must appear regularly at a satisfactory level to pass.

Prerequisites

  • Must be a certified level I instructor, current with membership dues and education credits.
  • Must be able to ride comfortably in all intermediate and basic advanced terrain.
  • Must be actively working at a Snowsports School.

This 2-day event examines candidates on their use of the Teaching model, ability to communicate, actual demonstrations by the candidate, use of methodology tools, tasks, drills, exercises, and overall instructor presence. Candidates will be asked to teach adults and children. Scoring for this event is pass or fail. Essential elements of all teaching demonstrations must appear regularly at a satisfactory level to pass.

Prerequisites

  • Must have passed the Level II Riding Module
  • Participants are strongly encouraged to attend one of the optional Level II Teach Trainings

LEVEL III CERTIFICATION EVENTS

Candidates must pass the Riding Module before taking the Teaching Module

LEVEL III RIDING MODULE [$90 per day]

This 3-day event includes a riding assessment, feedback, and coaching from clinician to meet the Level III Western Division Standards.* Demonstrations must illustrate accurate movement patterns. Certified level III instructors can snowboard any slope, with any snow condition commonly ridden by the public and can do so skillfully and dynamically. Scoring for this event is pass or fail. Essential elements of all riding maneuvers must appear regularly at a satisfactory level to pass.

Prerequisites

  • Must be a certified level II instructor, current with membership dues and education credits.
  • Must be able to ride comfortably in all types of terrain.
  • Must be actively working at a Snowsports School.

FREESTYLE ACCREDITATION EVENTS

FREESTYLE ACCREDITATION OVERVIEW [$70 per day]

The goal of the Freestyle Accreditation Program is to promote safe learning through educated instructors and coaches. This program will create a guide for certified instructors that want to become proficient in educating and coaching within the field of freestyle education. The courses will have a focus on teaching applications along side riding abilities. Candidates will learn to use safe teaching practices to progress students through stages of learning in Freestyle Arenas. The program will also be a forum for supporting and educating current NSAA safety standards such as the Smart Style Safety Initiative and proper Park and Pipe Etiquette. This program is not a certification, but rather an addition to a certification that someone already holds. The two levels of accreditation and the requirements for participation will be described below. Any candidate that completes the Freestyle Level II Accreditation successfully is considered to be a Freestyle Specialist by the American Association of Snowboard Instructors Western Division standards.

LEVEL I FREESTYLE ACCREDITATION [$70 per day]

Course Description:
The Level I Freestyle Accreditation consists of two days of training. Each day requires on hill activities that are educational as well as interactive. The first day covers the content and maneuvers required to successfully complete the course. The second day consists of more of accreditation candidates showing their teaching/coaching abilities in action. Understanding and application of skills must be shown in order to successfully complete the course. This is a pass or fail event.

  • AASI Level I Certification
  • A willingness and ability to perform the required freestyle maneuvers
  • The completion of Level I Freestyle Accreditation Workbook

LEVEL II FREESTYLE ACCREDITATION [$70 per day]

Course Description:
The Level II Accreditation consists of three days of training. Each day requires on hill activities that are educational as well as interactive. The first two days takes a deep look into the field of freestyle education. Participants will need to be able to show their skills in freestyle arenas as well as an ability to teach to a broad type of age groups and learning styles. The third day of this course puts the candidates in the lead so that they can give real life coaching to other candidates and trainers. Understanding and application of skills must be shown in order to successfully complete the course. This is a pass or fail event.

Prerequisites

  • AASI-W Level I Freestyle Accreditation or AASI Level II or III Certification
  • A willingness and ability to perform the required freestyle maneuvers
  • The completion of Level II Freestyle Accreditation Workbook

TRAINERS ACCREDITATION EVENTS

TRAINERS ACCREDITATION OVERVIEW

The goal of this program is to certify instructors to be able to train their peers in the theory and practice of teaching snowboarding. It is hoped the instructors participating in this program will learn how to become more effective trainers and educators. This accreditation is compromised of two, one-day prep events and one, two-day exam. This accreditation is also a prerequisite for members interested in working on the Western Division Tech Team.

Prerquisites:
Candidates must hold a current AASI Level III Certification & be an active member in their division.

TRAINERS ACCREDITATION PREP [$70 per day]

Candidates must attend two, one-day Trainers Accreditation Prep days to take the exam.

The first prep event will introduce material relative to being an effective trainer and give participants an introduction to some training theory and concepts. It is expected that candidates will be involved in training programs at their home resorts and that they will have ample opportunity to put these concepts into practice.

The second prep event will require the candidates each to present a short clinic to the rest of the group. The group will then give constructive feedback, directed by the clinician, to the presenter. At the end of this day each candidate will receive feedback both on their training abilities and their ability to deliver constructive feedback.

TRAINERS ACCREDITATION EXAM [$70 per day]

This two-day event will examine the candidate's ability to train, use of analysis skills, knowledge of material they present, and their ability to accurately demonstrate what they educate. This event is a pass or fail event.

This optional 1-day event is designed for candidates planning on taking the level II Teaching Module. Sample teaching progressions, the teaching model & methodology (tasks, exercises, drills) and movement analysis will be covered.

LEVEL II & LEVEL III TRAINING [$60 per day]

This optional 1-day event is designed for instructors that plan to be candidates for either the Level II or III Module. This is an educational day to set candidates on the right track for their pursuits for certification advancement.

Candidates must be at least a current AASI Level I Certified Instructor to attend.

SHUT-UP & RIDE [$60 per day]

This 1-day event gets back to the roots of the why we are out here, the riding. The day is spent focusing on personal riding techniques through mileage. The use of riding tactics and task progressions keep the clinic moving; talking is left for rides on the chairlift.

INTRO TO FREESTYLE COACHING [$60 per day]

This 1-day event educates instructors the basics of coaching in Terrain Arenas. Clinic covers freestyle safety, basic freestyle progressions inside & outside of the park, tactics for working with groups in Terrain Arenas, and how to create your own progressions on the fly. This is a great way to start your path as a Freestyle Coach.

INTRO TO PARK & PIPE RIDING [$60 per day]

This 1-day event is focused on your personal freestyle riding. The clinic will give instructors safe methods for developing their freestyle skills, as well as progressions that they can transfer into their own teaching methods. This a good clinic for any snowboarder that wants to improve their skills, style, and versatility in small and medium Terrain Arenas.
